Chris Pate \ Architectural Graduate
Chris joined Design Engine in May after recently graduating from the Sheffield School of Architecture in 2017 with a degree in Structural Engineering and Architecture.
During his time at Sheffield Chris undertook a dual programme which led him to explore both Architecture and Structural Engineering and the relationship between both fields. Chris was involved in several projects including a walking shelter in the peak district that aimed to use vernacular materials to engage the visitor with the landscape as well as a multi-purpose complex in York that responded to the idea of ‘the reciprocal city’; encouraging the public to become engaged with the city and the river Ouse.
In his final year he designed a modern photography centre in Scarborough exploring the narrative of realism within architecture and modern life. As well as the architectural design Chris also produced the technical calculations and design from a structural perspective; including staircase and steelwork design using a 3D structural analysis software. This project allowed both the architecture and structural design to run in parallel, resulting in a design that encompassed both fields.
Chris undertook a final year dissertation that focused on the energy consumption of the existing housing stock. This individual project used an energy analysis software to evaluate the carbon footprint of both existing and new build housing.
