Sarah joined Design Engine in early 2021 after studying at The University of Edinburgh, graduating from the MA degree (RIBA Part 1) with First Class Honours.

During her third year of study Sarah undertook a 6-month placement at Comprehensive Design Architects, Edinburgh. Whilst at the practice she worked predominantly on a construction stage high-end residential scheme, gaining technical and site experience.

For her dissertation Sarah considered the narratives of residents of the Red Road Estate, Glasgow, a 1960’s housing development recently demolished after numerous social and structural difficulties. The paper explored how municipal and architectural decisions had influenced the lived experiences of the community; concluding that a disparity between architectural ideals and pragmatic needs were exacerbated by a complete lack of engagement with residents themselves.

Sarah’s final year design unit ‘Productive City’ sought to redefine the relationship between inhabitation and productivity. Due to the pandemic, the concept of living and working in the same space soon became a reality for the end of her degree. Sarah designed a ceramist community located in Granton, Edinburgh. The influence of ceramic production extended into the residential and collaborative areas due to the project’s preoccupation with haptic, sensory and material qualities of space.
